Microbiota, the immune system, black moods and the brain—melancholia updated

چکیده
INTRODUCTION There is now abundant evidence that the immune system and the brain have close functional interactions in both directions. This review focuses on the influence of the microbiota (the bacteria resident in the gut) on brain function in major depressive disorder (MDD) and related syndromes. The gut and the central nervous system communicate partly through the autonomic nervous system (ANS), consisting of the sympathetic (i.e., the splanchnic nerves) and the parasympathetic (i.e., the vagus nerve and the sacral parasympathetic pelvic nerves) nervous system. The brain integrates inputs from the digestive tract by a central autonomic network that includes the hypothalamus, limbic system and cerebral cortex with output to the ANS and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal gland (HPA) stress axis (Bonaz, 2013). There are also extensive chemical signaling systems via the blood.

Interaction between Intestinal Microbiota and Serotonin Metabolism
Gut microbiota regulates the production of signaling molecules, such as serotonin or 5-Hydroxytryptamine: 5-HT in the host. Serotonin is a biogenic amine that acts as a neurotransmitter in the gut and brain. There is a perfect interaction between human gastrointestinal microbiota and the serotonin system. The gut microbiota plays an important role in the serotonin signaling pathways through the...

Non-responsiveness or poor responsiveness to vaccines are challenging issues in vaccine development, and efforts have been made to find out the potential reasons for these conditions. Intestinal microbiome plays a key role in regulating and development of immune system and the composition and diversity of microbiota in different individuals on the one hand, and the imbalance of intestinal micro...
متن کاملThe Role of Intestinal Microbiota in Cognitive Disorders
Cognitive disorders are one of the major public health issues in older population worldwide. Problems in forming and storing new memories, short-term memory impairment, and other cognitive problems are common symptoms of cognitive disorders that have no definite treatment yet. Recent studies have shown an association between gut microbiota and cognitive impairments described as microbiota-gut-...
متن کاملIntestinal microbiota and immune function in the pathogenesis of irritable bowel syndrome.
The pathophysiology of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is believed to involve alterations in the brain-gut axis; however, the etiological triggers and mechanisms by which these changes lead to symptoms of IBS remain poorly understood. Although IBS is often considered a condition without an identified "organic" etiology, emerging evidence suggests that alterations in the gastrointestinal microbio...
متن کاملPsychobiotics and Brain-Gut Microbiota Axis
Fermented foods containing probiotic bacteria have been used for many years to improve the health or treatment of some diseases. Nowadays, the Therapeutic properties of probiotics are becoming more and more obvious to everyone, insofar as in recent years, more attention has been paid to the potential relation between gut microbiota and mental health. Several studies have shown that intestinal m...
